Case study Bangalore
Bangalore has been chosen by the Indo-German-Swiss e-waste initiative as one of the case study city in India. EMPA has been playing the leading driving force in Bangalore. Its initiative partner GTZ plays a major role in bringing a solution to the case study city Delhi.
Bangalore seemed to be optimal for a case study in 2004, when the Swiss participation in the initative came to play. Bangalore as the IT-City of India with its techparks and a population between 6 - 7 million people produces a lot of E-waste, at least enough for several operational E-waste recycler. The presence of authorised e-waste recycler made Bangalore the ideal case study city for EMPA to provide knowledge about e-Waste management. Until now, E-waste recycling is still dominated by the informal sector.
In 2006, the e-Waste Agency (EWA) was founded as Association of e-Waste stakeholders and to bring them together on one table. EWA is still in the growing phase, but has already strong members as HP, Infosys and Wipro.
The Clean E-Waste Channel is one of EMPA's heard concept for E-waste management in India's Cities and was introduced to Bangalore. It shall in the first step include the corporate sector and lever the awareness in the informal sector. In the seconde phase, the household segment and the small and medium enterprises shall be included.
